OPEN YOUR EYES

I was doing a seminar one weekend when a woman stood up with a question.

“Kute, listen, you say there are miracles, but I don’t understand how you can say that. Have you checked the news lately? Shootings, pandemics, wildfires. What about Jeffrey Epstein, and Harvey Weinstein? How can you still believe in miracles when there seems to be so much evil in the world?”

Humbled by her question, I realized what a complex problem she was identifying, one we all wrestle with. It was a big question, sometimes hard to get into in the midst of a weekend seminar. But I knew that the proper perspective on what our world is, and our place in it, can be key to surrender.

“Listen, I don’t have the answers, but here are some thoughts. I’m not going to pretend there aren’t difficult situations in this lifetime. I won’t try to convince you that life isn’t challenging, full of ups and downs. The reality is, this physical world is not some perfect utopia and it will never be. I’m not saying live in a bubble and be Pollyanna about life. But if we want to be free, we have to understand that life isn’t perfect, and learn to accept the reality of this human existence. And as we begin surrendering to that, we begin to find a different relationship with life.”

I paused.

“Don’t look for perfection in this world. It doesn’t exist here.”

Here is what that means.

This world is a realm of interdependent, polar opposites.

Good and bad.

Light and dark.

Life and death.

Male and female.

Up and down.

Left and right.

Yin and yang.

It’s the Tao. Life contains the whole. The entire universe is a manifestation of the Divine. And in the Divine, everything exists. Because the Divine is everything. So all possibilities exist in this world. Everything is contained within it. The sacred and the profane. The holy and the unholy.

Yet the divine, what we truly are, is beyond duality.

So to surrender is to understand and accept the nature of reality and to accept life as it is. Then you no longer resist it, fight it, and seek perfection in the imperfect. You no longer seek the infinite in the finite.

But let me be clear. To come to a place of acceptance of this world doesn’t mean certain acts are acceptable, that we are condoning them or excusing them. It doesn’t mean we don’t try to make changes or better the world; that we don’t try to end human trafficking or feed every child in need. But when we come to accept this world as it is, when we don’t expect the world to be some perfect place, then, when it’s not perfect, we aren’t fighting it. We aren’t in resistance. The expectation of perfection drops away and it frees us to stop resisting the world. When we can accept the world, then we can step into the world and make changes from the place of nonresistance.

This is key.

In fact, I believe that those difficult situations are actually calling us to step into our own power and goodness.
